May 2

Busy week at our house with Paul home and off work this past week. So I didn't spend much time on the computer. I haven't been quite as successful at waiting until hunger this week either, but I definitely have been eating less. Hopefully things will smooth out this week.

April 26 & 27

I weighed myself yesterday morning and was down 4 lbs. That made my day. I think I will keep at this eat-when-you're-hungry plan. Today we were on the road for most of the day. I brought along some snacks but I didn't snack too much.

Andrea

Tuesday
Breakfast - whole wheat crackers and bit of peanut butter, banana (on the road)
Lunch - chinese (didn't eat too much because it wasn't very good)
Snack - 1/2 an ice cream cone (again, it wasn't that great, kind of chalky, so I let the kids finish it)
Supper - not hungry

Monday
Breakfast - Fibre One cereal with milk
Lunch - soup, 1 chicken strip
Supper - soup, 2 biscuits

April 25

Breakfast - 2 eggs, 1 piece of high fibre toast, 1 slice ham
Lunch - leftovers, piece of cake
Not hungry the rest of the day

April 24

Paul's home and all is well.

Andrea

Breakfast - Fibre One with milk
Lunch - bowl of soup, 1/2 a bun, 2 mini clementines
Supper - beef, bit of rice, cooked carrots, piece of chocolate cake

April 23

I wasn't completely hungry at 8:00 this morning but I still ate breakfast. While making supper in the afternoon, I nibbled on a bit of some beef and grapes so wasn't at all hungry when the kids ate. So I just didn't eat.
It's funny, I've been ok with not eating with everyone else if I'm not hungry. Before I would have just eaten anyway.

Andrea

Breakfast - Fibre One cereal with milk, bit of cantaloupe
Lunch - 2 turkey bites, chinese salad (coleslaw, a bit of slivered almonds and steam fried noodles, green onions, dressing was oil, soya sauce, chicken stock)
Snacked on a bit of beef and grapes before supper
Apple with 2 tbsp light peanut butter

April 22

It was 9:00 this morning before I felt hungry. Then I was off to town to do some shopping and for a hair cut.

Andrea

Breakfast - Fibre One cereal with milk (9:00)
Lunch at 1:30 - raw veggies and dip (1:30)
Supper - burger in 1/2 a pita with lots of veggies, greek dressing, 2 clementines
1/2 hour fast walk in the evening
It sure seems that when I wait for hunger, I eat so much less.

April 21

I woke up not feeling hungry yet, probably because of the peanut butter I had last night. So I waited, I had to stop myself from pouring my cereal a few times because I'm so used to eating with the kids. So breakfast was at 10:00 when I finally felt hungry.

I spent from noon till 7:30 driving to Saskatoon and back with a friend of Paul's. We were looking at a vehicle that Paul was interested in but couldn't go see because he's not home yet. I wasn't hungry before we left so at around 5:00 on the way back home I had a piece of cinnamon bread, not a great choice but the only one that was available. Then when I got home I had 1 1/2 pieces of pizza. Again not the best choice but it was available and it was getting late. Normally I would have just ate both pieces but I stopped 1/2 way through the second piece because I actually felt full. Then I went for a 1/2 hour walk at a fast pace while the kids rode their bikes.

It was interesting to wait for hunger today rather than just eating at normal meal times. Hopefully by waiting and eating less when I do feel hungry, I will get to where I am actually hungry at meal times.

Andrea

Breakfast - Fibre One cereal with milk (less than usual)
Lunch - nothing
Snack - 1 slice of cinnamon bread
Supper - 1 1/2 pieces of pizza
Not a healthy eating day but it sure wasn't much food.

April 20

I really focused on looking for my hunger signals today. By 7:45 I was very hungry so I ate about 3/4 of my usual amount of cereal. By noon my stomach was growling so I had a salad and a yogurt. And that kept me going until supper. I bbq'd pork chops for supper and they smelled so good.

Andrea

Breakfast - Fibre One cereal with milk
Lunch - salad (lettuce, cucumbers, red and green onion, feta cheese, greek dressing), yogurt
Supper - leftover potato vegetable soup, pork chop
Snack - felt hungry when I came home from a meeting so I had a spoonful of peanut butter (probably should have
just gone to bed)

New Day

After many weeks of avoiding stepping on the scale, I stepped on it this morning. I'm up about 3or 4 lbs since the beginning of February. I'm not impressed with it but I'm not surprised either. I could have gone on another many weeks avoiding it but I don't want to do that again. This weight loss journey seems so hard. I know what I have to do but doing it isn't easy. And life happens and it's easy to just toss it aside for a while.

So I'll take it one day at a time and start with today. I woke up to a call on Skype at 5:30 this morning so I've been going since then. Now my stomach is growling so I'll have breakfast, but a little less than usual. I think I'm eating pretty healthy, most of the time, but my portions should probably be a bit smaller. So I'll start with that today and see how it goes and deal with tomorrow when it comes.

Lunch - a few turkey bites (didn't feel like anything else)
Snack - celery with a bit of cream cheese
Supper - spaghetti squash, casserole

April 17 & 18

Paul finally has plans in place to make it home. Hopefully they all go as planned. Seems Portugal is safe to fly to the US so that's what we've booked. Just fights from Portugal have been filling up quickly so Friday is the earliest we could get. Even if some flights around Europe start up Monday like they are talking, I think this is his best bet because it's going to take a while for everything to get back to normal.

Went for a long walk with Michelle and Ben today too.

Andrea

Saturday
Breakfast - Fibre One cereal with milk
Lunch - salad, yogurt, banana
Supper - 3 pieces of Mel's pizza at the 30 hour Famine (it was the end of the famine for the kids)

April 15

I just talked to Paul on Skype this afternoon. Because of the volcano that erupted in Iceland, all kinds of flights have been cancelled. He is trying to get out of Russia by train on Friday instead of by plane and then we will see if by Sunday flights are leaving Germany. Just what he needs, to be stuck over there after being there a month already.

I've had a good last few days. Got some meetings done that I had kind of been nervous about. Turns out that when I'm well prepared for them, there's nothing to worry about.

I'll be taking Michelle to the doctor tomorrow because of a bad cough she has that just won't go away. She has had it about a week now and she is so tired because it keeps her up at night. As soon as she comes home from school, she goes straight into my bed and falls asleep. We'll see if she can make it to the 30 Hour Famine that the youth at our church are having tomorrow.

Three more sleeps till Paul comes home (hopefully)!

Andrea

Breakfast - 2 eggs and slice of cheese, spoonful of peanut butter
Lunch - salad, 1 turkey bite
Supper - homemade soup, 3 homemade biscuits (I definitely should have stopped at 2)
a bit of canned peaches

Well, a busy weekend is done. Just one more busy day and then the kids and I will be relaxing poolside for a few days. I'm looking forward to that!

Andrea

(I couldn't even begin to track what I've eaten these last few days. I'll start tracking again tomorrow.)

Thursday

The kids are off school for the next week and we have lots planned. The next few days will be filled with helping friends get set up for their annual bull sale and then helping at the sale on Tuesday. Then we'll be helping at a farm auction. And then we'll be off to Medicine Hat for a few days of playing at a hotel with an indoor waterpark and maybe we'll do a bit of shopping. We have to have a bit of fun on the kids week off school.

But more important than all that, we will be celebrating Jesus this weekend and all that He did for us.

Andrea

Snack - grapefruit
Lunch - 3 turkey bites, an orange
Snack - popcorn
Supper - lots of samples at an Epicure party tonight

Saturday

Oh boy, I love this weather. The kids and I went out this afternoon to the tennis/basketball court just down from our house and we played for about an hour. First we had a little basketball game and then we hit around a tennis ball for a while. Meanwhile Josh was out snaring gophers. It's spring all right!

While the boys went to a father/son breakfast at the church (they used Ellwood as their father since Paul is away), Michelle and I went out for lunch and did a bit of shopping. We both ordered a small meal and then shared them.

Andrea

Breakfast - grapefruit
Lunch - 1/2 chicken and salad wrap, 1 pc fish, some fries
Supper - salad
Snack - a few cookies

Friday, March 26, 2010

I've felt much more in control today. The last few days haven't been too bad but there were definitely some food choices I should have avoided.

Andrea

Breakfast - cereal, orange
Lunch - salad, banana
Supper - eggs on toast, 1/2 grapefruit
Will probably still have some popcorn (popped in a pot
with a bit of oil on the stove, no butter, just salt, that's the best way to have it)

Wednesday

Michelle has 11 more weeks and her braces come off. The countdown begins!

The kids and I saw an excellent movie tonight that just came out on DVD. Blind Side. Very worth it!

My Own Personal Trainer

The last 2 days have been much better. Sunday after church was potluck and I find those are easy to stay on track. I always make sure to bring a big salad and a healthy dessert, this time I brought a fruit salad. Then we headed to the "big city" to play around at a hotel for the night. We picked up some food at the grocery store on the way. So I had 1/2 a wrap, some salad and a bit of chips. I brought my cereal for in the morning and we went out for lunch. It was a bigger meal than I normally have for lunch but then supper was a banana and 2 turkey bites. We also spent hours in the pool. While the kids played I jogged in the water. So a pretty good 2 days.

Michelle and I have decided that we need to get out walking more. We went out tonight for a bit and she really pushed me. We would walk at a fast pace and then every few minutes she would push me to power walk for a minute. She's my very own personal trainer.

Hard

Why does this have to be so hard???? And why do I give in so easily???

The Weekend In A Nutshell

Friday was a good eating day. Saturday would have been good if I hadn't eaten all those sugar cookies with icing that the kids and I made and decorated. But Sunday was back to normal again.

My daughter, Michelle, seems to be in high demand these days. A few months ago a lady in town that caters mentioned that she had her eye on Michelle and would like to start training her within a year to help her at functions that she caters. Then the other day the friends of ours that own the restaurant up the street asked me if Michelle was interested in working. They said they've had their eye on her to run the ice cream window out of their restaurant for the season, probably starting in a few weeks working afterschools and probably through till September. Wow, pretty popular girl, she's going to be rolling in the dough!! The only thing is getting a permit for her to work since she is still 13 until October, but hopefully that isn't a big deal. She's pretty excited!

Any ideas for satisfying my sweet cravings. I think that's why I eat cookies because I don't have anything else (that I want) when I'm just craving something sweet.

Andrea

Breakfast - cereal with milk
Lunch - 1/2 a BLT salad with chicken at Burger King
Snack - banana, turkey bite (thanks Dawne for reminding me of one of my favorite snacks)
Supper - chicken veg soup (again, thanks to Dawne for the recipe which I have below, it's soooo good!!)

Leftover Turkey Chicken Soup Recipe

2 tsp. canola oil
1 pound leftover turkey chicken, cut into cubes

1 1/2 cups chopped celery, carrots (each)

1 cup chopped onions

4 cups chicken broth

1 large can tomatoes, cut up

1/3 cup pearl barley

3/4 tsp marjoram

1/2 tsp each thyme, ground sage, salt and pepper

1/4 chopped fresh parsley

Heat oil in large saucepan, add vegetables and saute. Add spices. Add all remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce to low. Cover and simmer 30 - 35 minutes, until barley is tender. Enjoy your left over Thanksgiving turkey chicken!

Can you tell I just learned to strike out words!!!

Busy Weekend

This weekend has been really busy. Friday Paul made it home from a 2 week trip so he made it to one of Josh's curling games and then we all headed to bed early. During the day on Saturday we headed to a nearby small town's trade show and in the evening we went to our rink's 3rd annual dinner and fundraiser auction. And because I am on the rink board as well as their treasurer, I had to work most of the evening. But it was fun. They raised just over $25,000.00. So for the 3 years we've been doing it we've raised about $90,000.00 which is amazing for a small community. Our rink would definitely have closed down with out this help.

Then yesterday it was off to church for the morning. Sunday afternoon is usually when we try to get a nap in but that didn't seem to happen yesterday so Paul, Michelle and I went over to visit some friends for most of the afternoon. In the evening we headed out for a walk but stopped to visit with an elderly man from our town who drives around in his car for what seems to be hours. He said if we were just going to stand there talking we may as well hop in and he'd take us for a drive. So we drove out of town and he showed us where he used to live and farm and all kinds of interesting things that only an 84 year old local would know. We enjoy visiting with people like him and just hearing his life experiences. He is someone who is probably pretty bored and lonely usually being by himself and really, how hard is it to just spend time with him. Not hard at all. I think we just have to look for those kinds of opportunities everyday in the people around us and we'd be amazed at what we'd find.

This weekend hasn't been too bad eating wise. I can barely remember what I ate Friday and Saturday but I'll write down what I ate yesterday.

Andrea

Breakfast - Fibre One cereal with milk
Lunch - leftover soup with a bit of cheese and crackers
Snack - banana, 2 cookies
Supper - slow cooked beef, chinese salad, cooked veggies
I skipped ice cream in the evening!

Sick

Two sick kids home today. One with just a bad cough that almost makes him throw up and the other one feeling like he could throw up. Although now they both feel much better. They even felt up to baking some cookies and squares. The cookies will be thrown into the freezer so I won't eat them and the squares will go to Ben's 4-H project meeting tonight.

Andrea

Breakfast - Fibre One with milk, banana
Lunch - salad, fresh bun, banana
Supper - homemade soup, a bit of Josh's cookie dough
Exercise - I went out and shoveled snow for over 1 hour, at different times during the day. We're trying to get an old car out from the very back of our property. Right now it could make it about 1/2 way to the driveway so we'll have to shovel the rest tomorrow.

Accountability

Accountability, that's what I need. I do ok at first when I try to do it on my own but I slowly get off track. So I really need this blog for the accountability. So even though I might not write anything interesting everyday, I need to just write out what I'm eating. It won't be very exciting but that's what I need to stay on track. So that's what I'm going to do!

Yesterday I added a new friend to my facebook. He's a young man that we had living with us here for about a year. We had kind of lost contact with him and weren't sure what happened to him after he left our home. Things hadn't ended so well when he left, so it was nice to reconnect with him and we look forward to dropping in to see him this summer when we head back to Ontario for a visit. It will be interesting to see what has happened in his life this past year.

Andrea

Breakfast - Fibre One cereal with milk

Lunch - chicken blt salad with balsamic dressing
and a diet Coke (at Burger King)
Snack - banana
Supper - chinese salad, ice cream

Still Here

I think my mom thinks I disappeared or something happened to me because I haven't been on here in a while. It's nothing like that, I just don't feel that I have much to say sometimes. But I am still here. Still trying to eat healthy. Still exercising some mornings. Still keeping busy.

I weighed myself a few times over the last few weeks and was up about 2 lbs but I am still working at it.

Off to church today, then Michelle and Josh have 4-H photography but we will make it home to watch the hockey game.

Andrea

Feb. 5/10

Down another pound. YEAH!!! That's with eating out for 4 days and my birthday!! Pretty good!

Thursday, January 28, 2010

Still Here

I get in these moods where I don't want to write out what I'm eating, not because it's going bad, just because I don't feel like it. So I didn't for about a week but I still did ok eating this last week. I had a few pieces of pizza on the weekend but other than that did pretty good. I weighed myself this morning and was down another one pound. So I'm happy with that.

I know that my goal when I started was to lose around 50 pounds by summer but now I'm just happy to be losing and it doesn't really matter how long it takes. I have been learning much healthier eating these past few weeks and as long as it keeps going down, I'm happy.

I talked to Paul and the kids on Skype a few times since 1:00 this morning (I turn up the speaker so it will wake me when they call). They are doing great. They spent the day touring Berlin. They went to see Check Point Charlie (the most well known Berlin Wall crossing point between East and West Germany during the Cold War), and the Brandenburg Gate (the only remaining gate of a series through which people formerly entered Berlin). Tomorrow they fly into London and will be in England until Saturday.

Andrea

Day 119 and 120

I'm missing my other half of the family today. I missed their call on skype tonight because I was at the rink at our church's skating party and potluck. Boy, I wish it was easier to get a hold of them. This week is looking busier so it won't be so bad. And when I get really bored I tend to go organize a room or something. Good way to get the house organized before they come home. Now if I would just get the urge to clean, that would be helpful!!

Andrea

Supper - chicken breast, sauteed veggies
Exercise - 20 minute walk outside (it's been about +3 today)

Day 116

Right now Michelle and Josh should be up in the air somewhere. They were so excited when I talked to them just before they boarded the plane! I'm so excited for them. I can't wait for them to call me on skype once they get there.

I just finished WATP 2 mile walk. I had to push myself to start it since I don't have Michelle here to push me but I feel good now that I've done it. I'm going to try to wake up
early tomorrow morning before the kids get up and get to it then.

For the last maybe 1/2 a year, Paul's brother has lost about 40 lbs by just changing the way he eats (he also swims everyday I think). He started looking into the glycemic index and what effect different foods have on your insulin level and your body's ability to digest foods. I don't understand it all but Paul and I have been looking into it and are beginning to change what we eat . It just means switching from certain high GI foods to low GI foods so that your body feels fuller longer and uses up the energy rather than storing it as fat.

Andrea

Breakfast
oatmeal with brown sugar
banana

Lunch
cucumber slices
sugar snap peas
guacamole

Snack
handful of cashews

Supper
couscous
veg stir fry

Exercise
WATP 30 minutes

Day 115

I spent the day again in town. I drove in early with Paul again yesterday morning to pick up Paul's truck from GM but it turned out that they weren't finished with it. So I had to stay in town until Paul was done work.

We decided, kind of last minute, for Paul to take Michelle and Josh along on his business trip to Germany, Denmark and England. We booked the tickets last night and now they are on their way to Calgary where they fly out of. They are going to have so much fun, I wish I were going. We actually checked to see if we could all go along but the flight that Paul had already booked couldn't fit us all in but could fit those two. I'll have to find something fun for Ben, Matt and I to do.

I am down 1 lb this week.

Andrea

Breakfast
apple

Snack
another apple (that's all I brought into town)

Lunch
stir fried veggies
spicy beef

Thursday, January 7, 2010

Day 111

I don't think I will be able to avoid doing my WATP exercise video anymore. The kids love doing it with me. Before supper I did the 35 minute workout with Michelle while Matt walked on the treadmill beside us and Josh and Ben just sat watching us. Then as soon as we were done Josh did the 20 minute and the 30 minute work out and then ran a mile on the treadmill. We are all going to be fit if we keep this up!

Andrea

oatmeal with brown sugar

Lunch
salad with egg and dressing
nutella (very very bad)

Supper

(I skipped the fresh buns)

Exercise
35 minutes WATP

Day 110 (I think)

Started my day by sleeping in. I had planned to exercise with Michelle at 7:00. Paul normally leaves for work at 6:00 (and I get up with him) but we slept later this morning because he wasn't feeling great. So by the time I got out of bed and got the kids and Paul out the door and finally got to my exercise video it was 10:00. But I did it and felt good. Then it was off to Swift again for Michelle's orthodontist appointment in the afternoon.

Andrea

Breakfast
vector with milk

Lunch
salad with 1/2 an egg and a bit of cooked chicken
greek dressing

Supper
taco salad (salad with taco seasoned beef, dorito chips, salsa and sour cream)
spoonful of Nutella (I don't normally have this in the house because I could eat the whole jar in one sitting!!)

Finally Opened My Exercise DVD

I drove into Swift with 2 elderly ladies today. They both live close by me, one had an appointment she needed to get to and the other needed to do a bit of shopping so I drove them into Swift. What a funny day. When I told Paul how my day went in town with them it took me about 30 minutes to just tell him about it and it was hilarious the things these two ladies said and did. That was my entertainment for the day!

When I got home Michelle had already opened my Walk Away the Pounds DVD and done the 19 minute work out with Ben and was waiting for me to do the 30 minute one with her. So I changed and away we walked. I was pooped by the end of it. Wow, I'm really not in good shape. But I liked it and I'm glad Michelle likes it and will do it with me. That will keep me motivated.

Andrea

Breakfast
vector with milk

Lunch
chef salad

Back to Normal

The kids are back to school today and Paul is back to work so I'm hoping things get a little back to normal around here. My eating at least. We finally finished those cake truffles from Paul's birthday. Those are terrible little things!!

I stepped on the scale this morning and I am about the same as 2 weeks ago (within 1/2 a pound). So I pretty much stayed the same over Christmas and New Year's. Pretty good since that's when most people gain so I think I did ok.

Today or tomorrow I will open up my new Walk Away the Pounds DVD and get moving, hopefully with Michelle because that will make it more fun.

Paul's Birthday

Today went pretty good except I had stomach cramps almost all day. Not the funnest time of the month.

It's Paul's birthday today. The kids and I had planned to take him out for supper tonight but he wasn't feeling that great so we just stayed in instead. Maybe we'll go out tomorrow when we are in Regina. I made some cake truffles (I made that name up). I kind of copied part of a recipt from another blog that I follow and made a few changes. I had made them for New Year's eve when we had some friends over and I thought no one would like them but it turned out everyone loved them, even the adults. So here's the recipe, if anyone's interested.

Cake Truffles

1 box of cake mix - bake the cake according to box
1 1/2 cups icing (I made butter cream icing)
1/2 cup dry oatmeal
chocolate to melt (I used some of a giant chocolate bar that I got at Walmart but you can use any chocolate that will melt well)
chocolate sprinkles

When the cake has cooled, crumble the entire cake with your hands into a large bowl. Add oatmeal and icing (use 1 cup icing to start). Add enough icing so that the mixture forms a workable dough. Roll 1 inch balls and let them cool in the fridge. Melt chocolate. Using a skewer, poke the cake balls and dip them in chocolate and place them on wax paper. Sprinkle with chocolate sprinkles then let them cool in the fridge.

Not very weight conscious dessert but a nice treat.

1 slice toast

Supper

2 small cake truffles

**I forgot to add that I walked 20 minutes

Happy New Year

Happy (late) New Year's! I hope you all had a fun time celebrating it. We had fun with some friends over that night.

I haven't been on here very much the last few weeks and I'm probably up 2 lbs because of it. I don't know, I haven't wanted to step on the scale but it feels like it. I've definitely eaten a bit more than I should have. I'm kind of looking forward to the kids going back to school and Paul going back to work because it's just a little harder to say no to food when they are always around snacking on things when I know I'm not hungry. So I know I've said this before and haven't stuck to it, but I need to keep track of what I eat on here for the accountability. And I need to get exercising, either on my treadmill or using the new Walk Away the Pounds DVD I bought. Michelle even said she would want to do it with me.

So I will be back on here tonight or tomorrow morning letting you know how today went.
